Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following a fatal stabbing in Walworth, Southeast London, with police called to the scene today at around 10.40am

A man has died after multiple people were stabbed during a reported knife rampage in London this morning. Three people were injured, one of whom died at the scene in Walworth, Southeast London.

Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the fatal stabbing. Emergency services were called to the scene in East Street Market at around 10.40am today November 10. A man, believed to be aged in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody.

The force confirmed that enquiries are under way to confirm the deceased man’s identity and inform his family. Two other people – a man and a woman – were taken to hospital for treatment, with officers now awaiting an assessment of their condition.

Commander Peter Stevens said: “Tragically, a man lost his life this morning, and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family. My thoughts and sincere sympathies are with them, and with the other people injured. Our investigation is at a very early stage.

“One man was rapidly arrested by officers responding to the incident. At present, although enquiries are ongoing, nobody else is sought. The incident is not being treated as terrorism. Enquiries continue, led by dedicated detectives from Specialist Crime. I want to thank those people who have already shared their accounts of what they saw with police.

Social media users discussing the reported incident have told people to expect “delays”. One wrote: “East street market, expect delays due to a major incident.” Staff at local shops told MyLondon that they had been told multiple people were injured in the incident, with one resident telling the publication: “There were two ambulances with flashing lights taking two people away.”

Another local speaking, said they arrived when the cordon was in place when they arrived, and they “couldn’t believe what had happened”. They added: “It’s a very busy market, especially on weekends. I know stabbings happen every day in London but experiencing it close to home is frightening.”

One person who was working at the market when the attack took place, said they saw someone coming down the road with a knife, and that the incident made them scared to work in the area, adding: “Nothing like this has happened before.” They said: “People will be scared in the area. I think the market will be open next week, we’ll lose food because it’s closed. We have to be careful and check around us. We have to be careful in this area.” Another resident, who was not named, said: “There were two ambulances with flashing lights taking two people away.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today (Sunday 10) at 10.39am to reports of a stabbing in East Street, SE17. We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, members of our tactical response unit, an advanced paramedic, an incident response officer, and London’s air ambulance.

“We treated three people and took two of them to a London Major trauma centre. Sadly, despite our best efforts, one person was pronounced dead at the scene.” The London Ambulance Service spokesperson added.
