South East: House of Reps Holds Public Hearing On “Wanton” Extortion, Humiliations At Military/Police Checkpoints

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions will on Thursday December 5, 2024 hold public hearing on the “Unlawful Extortion of Motorists and Wanton Humiliation of Civilian Passengers and Road Users by Security Operatives Serving in Some Joint Task Force/Military Checkpoints and Outposts in South East Region of Nigeria.”

The petition was brought to the House by the Igbo National Council (INC).

The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday December 5, 2024 at the National Assembly Complex Abuja.

Towards this, the INC is calling on the people and residents of South East region to immediately furnish it with videos and pictures of such “Unlawful Extortion and Wanton Humiliation of Civilian Passengers” who are asked to come down from their vehicles and trek a distance to pass the checkpoints before entering their vehicle to continue with their journey.

The full statement by the Directorate of Human Rights Protection Desk, Igbo National Council (INC) titled ‘CALL FOR PICTURES AND VIDEOS EVIDENCE’ reads:

“The National Assembly – House of Representatives – Committee on Public Petitions has fixed the Hearing of the Igbo National Council (INC) “Petition Against the Unlawful Extortion of Motorists and Wanton Humiliation of Civilian Passengers and Road Users by Security Operatives Serving in Some Joint Taskforce / Military Checkpoints and Outposts in South East Region on Nigeria to hold on Thursday 5th December, 2024 at the National Assembly Complex Abuja.

“The Hearing is to ascertain the level of Human Rights Violations against civilians by the Security Operatives Serving in Some Joint Taskforce / Military Checkpoints and Outposts in South East Region of Nigeria and the necessary Actions taken against the Perpetrators.

“On the foregoing, we therefore call on interested people of South East Region to immediately furnish us with Videos and Pictures of the Unlawful Extortion and Wanton Humiliation of Civilian Passengers that are asked to come down from their vehicles and trek a distance to pass the checkpoint before entering their vehicle to continue with their journey.

“Please forward the videos and Pictures to INC Directorate of Human Rights Protection via Whatsapp on 09085395089

“PLEASE NOTE: The Videos and Pictures will be presented to the National Assembly Committee on Public Petitions as evidence during the Hearing on Thursday 5th December, 2024

“This Public Hearing may put to an end the ongoing humiliation of civilians by Security Operatives at the various Military Checkpoints in South East Region of Nigeria.”
