Update: BudGIT Criticises Naming Public Institutions After President Tinubu, 6 In 11 Months

Co-founder of BudGIT, Oluseun Onigbinde, has condemned the renaming of different public institutions after incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

On Thursday January 23, the President commissioned the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, Abuja named after him.

In a letter dated January 9, 2025 and addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Federal Government approved the establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In March 2024, the Federal Government renamed the Minna Airport in Niger State after President Tinubu. I had earlier been named after the late Abubakar Imam.

In May 2024, the President inaugurated the National Assembly Library and Resource Centre, named after him.

Also, in the same May 2024, the FCT Minister named the Southern parkway after President Tinubu.

And in December 2024, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) named its command and control centre, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex.

But the BudGIT Co-founder, Onigbinde, frowned at “this abuse of norms,” asking the “President should put a stop to this.”

Onigbinde expressed regret that this is “rooted in the sycophantic culture that has grown in recent times.”

According to him: “In less than a year, four public institutions have been named after the President Bola Tinubu.

“This abuse of norms is rooted in the sycophantic culture that has grown in recent times.”

“The President should put a stop to this as he’s signaling a culture that’s highly unacceptable.”
