The troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel who were killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State, in a development that has renewed public attention and stirred deep emotion over the tragic incident across the country.

Security sources disclosed that the victims – Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew – were abducted and murdered by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of the Imo State.

According to security sources, the couple had embarked on the journey in April 2022 to Mathew’s hometown for their traditional wedding ceremony – an occasion meant to unite their families and celebrate their relationship. Audu, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had completed years of dedicated service, while Mathew remained in active service and was widely described by colleagues as disciplined and committed to duty.

The remains were recovered during a recent military operation based on fresh intelligence. Sources said troops encountered resistance as suspected armed elements launched coordinated attacks, including an ambush and a follow-up assault.

However, the troops reportedly repelled the attackers and secured the area during the operation.

While combing the location, soldiers discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were subsequently excavated and the remains recovered for forensic examination.

Military authorities said efforts are underway to contact the families of the deceased to facilitate DNA verification in order to ensure proper identification ahead of burial.

The Nigerian Army has also affirmed that the fallen personnel will be accorded full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice to the nation.

The tragic incident highlights the continuing security challenges in parts of the South-East, where attacks by armed groups have affected both civilians and security personnel. Authorities say ongoing operations, supported by intelligence-driven strategies, are being intensified to restore stability across the region.
