Even with numerous zonal rallies and endorsements for Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, anxiety has begun to rise within Lion Building as an independent report suggests that a formidable candidate from Peter Obi’s Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) could overshadow his achievements and pose a hindrance to his relelction.

The report candidly indicated that, contrary to Governor Mba’s public confidence and image as a successful Governor, significant discontent exists among both political elites and ordinary citizens regarding his administration, which could manifest in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The report identified two main issues that could jeopardise the Governor’s prospects: His aloof demeanour, excessive taxation on the general populace, and his tendency to rely on Yorubas from his private enterprises to manage Enugu State affairs, a tendency that has effectively alienated the local population in key governance matters.
Furthermore, the report highlighted the political blunder Mbah made by aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and promoting President Tinubu to residents of Enugu.
Although Mbah hoped to leverage Presidential influence for electoral success, the report suggests that financial resources and rigging strategies may not be sufficient, given the prevailing sentiment among the electorate.
And to counter these challenges, it appears that Governor Mbah’s camp is actively trying to manipulate the nomination process within Obi’s NDC to ensure a weaker, more pliable opponent.
Investigations reveal that the Governor’s associates are investing substantial resources to prevent a strong candidate from emerging, particularly targeting a retired Permanent Secretary who is widely regarded as a formidable contender. Already, some NDC leaders in Enugu and Abuja are reportedly being incentivised to ensure this outcome.
However, our correspondent spoke with various NDC and Obidient Movement leaders who emphasised that regardless of the Governor’s strategies, the strongest candidate must prevail as the implications for Enugu are significant.
One NDC leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, remarked: “Governor Mbah ought to recognise that abandoning his constituents in favour of monetary gain and rigging protection carries significant repercussions, especially with the prospect of an Igbo Presidency at stake. Relying on manipulation while disregarding the people’s will is ultimately detrimental, as democracy hinges on the voice of the populace.”
