Terror bandits freed 240 inmates from Kabba jail, Prison Spokesperson confirms

Nigeria’s National Correctional Centre on Monday confirmed that 240 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State, Northcentral Nigeria when it was invaded by heavily armed terror bandits on Sunday night.

Though the Spokesperson could not identify the group that stormed the jail, freeing scores of inmates, but terrorists and bandits have been terrorising the Northwest and Northcentral regions of Nigeria for years.

Nigeria’s Correctional Service Spokesperson, Francis Enobore, said in a statement that “the medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State, has been attacked by yet to be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released.

“At about 2245 GMT on Sunday, he said, numerous attackers “engaged the armed guards in a fierce gun battle.

“But the gunmen invaded the prison, which had 294 prisoners in custody at the time, including 224 pre-trial detainees.

“Investigations were under way Monday to find the escapees.”

This is not the first time that Nigerian prisons have been invaded by gunmen.

On April 5, 2021,gunmen raided Imo State Police Headquarters, Owerri, freeing more than 1,800 inmates.
