NIMASA Confirms Attempted Sea Robbery In Nigerian Waters

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has confirmed an attempted sea robbery incident in Nigerian waters.

Some sea robbers had boarded the Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker “Sea Panther” Southwest of Brass, Nigeria.

This is the first time such incident of sea robbery is being reported in Nigerian waters since 2021.

A statement by NIMASA Spokesperson, Osagie Edward, said on Friday morning that four individuals boarded the vessel and made away with some personal items of crew members. However, he said that “all crew members are safe and MT Sea Panther has since sailed off Nigerian waters safely.”

The full statement by Edward said: “There has been an attempted sea robbery in Nigerian waters. Officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA at the C4i center monitoring the situation on Tuesday 21st April 2025 noted an illegal boarding of a Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker “Sea Panther” southwest of Brass, Nigeria.

“This is the first of such attempted sea robbery in Nigerian waters since 2021.

“Four individuals boarded the vessel and made away with some personal items of crew members. 

“All crew members are safe and MT Sea Panther has since sailed off Nigerian waters safely.

“NIMASA is working closely with relevant security agencies and further investigations into the incident are ongoing.”
