Unknown gunmen carried out a deadly attack on the residence of former Minister of Sports, Mr. Damishi Tonson Sango, in Dalwal village, Riyom Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, resulting in the death of a female relative and inflicting serious injury to his Police escort.
Sango was appointed Nigerian Minister of Sports in the first cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo, holding office between June 1999 and January 2001.

During the attack, Inspector Walba Go Tom, a diligent Police officer from the Special Protection Unit Base 4, Makurdi, attached to the former Minister, sustained gunshot wounds. His service rifle, an assault weapon with breach number, was taken away by the attackers.
A female relative of the former Minister was also hit by gunfire and later died while receiving treatment at Plateau Specialists Hospital in Jos. The Police officer is currently hospitalized and responding to treatment.
