The 2021 edition of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to take place in Cameroon is set to be moved from January/February dates to June/July.
CAF Secretary-General, Abdel-Moneim Bah, revealed this in an interview with Egyptian TV Time Sports. The CAF scribe said the decision to move it to January 2021 was always a temporary decision.
In January, CAF announced that the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will start on 9 January after its dates were moved.
The tournament was scheduled to take place in June and July but was changed because of the “unfavourable” weather in the country at that time of year.
Past editions of AFCONs have held in January/February calendar year and affected the competition because most top clubs do not release their top African players at the peak of their various leagues across the world.
As a result of this, CAF in 2019 moved the competition in Egypt to June/July which was won by the Desert Foxes of Algeria.
The 2019 tournament in Egypt was the first one to be held in the summer.
The 2021 AFCON to be staged in Cameroon will be the second.
