COVID-19: Reps ban members without face masks from plenary, insists face shield alone not enough

The House of Representatives has banned its members without face masks from entering the Chambers duriong plenary.

They were also ordered to maintan social distancing protocol of the COVID-19 fight or be sanctioned.

These new rules were contained in a directive handed down on Tuesday by the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase to the Chief Whip of the House, Muhammed Monguno.

Hon Wase who presided over the plenary on Tuesday made the announcement before the House adjourned Plenary to mourn the late Sen Adebayo Oshinowo.

The National Assembly sequel to its resumption of plenary in April adopted guidelines put forth by the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) which include special sitting arrangements and compulsory use of face masks.

Wase slammed lawmakers who do not adhere to the sitting arrangement warning them that they were putting their families in danger.

Wase warned, “Chief Whip, you will have to enforce the rules. When someone’s name is announced, just follow the rules, there are consequences for it, Just follow the rules. You (lawmakers) should not allow your name to be mentioned. We are supposed to be honourable members.

“I want us to sit in accordance with the rules and conduct ourselves in accordance with the protocol, otherwise we will be putting our families in danger, putting our country in danger.

“For now, Chief Whip, you have to enforce the rules, and we are going to hold you responsible”, and specifically outlawed Honourable members without face mask from entering the Chambers of the House.

He also wearing the face shield alone without the face mask was not enough henceforth.
