Magu enters fourth day of probe before Presidential panel with EFCC top management

Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday entered the fourth day of grilling by the Justice Ayo Salami presidential panel probing the graft allegations against him.

The day also saw Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede and Directors of the anti-corruption agency appearing before it.

Magu is appearing before the panel sitting at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja with his lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Kanu, as the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice under President Olusegun Obasanjo, incidentally set up the EFCC.

Magu, the EFCC Secretary and directors have been meeting with the panel since it resumed sitting by 10am on Thursday.

Magu is facing 21 corruption allegations emanating from the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Sources said that the EFCC top management were summoned to come and tell what they know about the allegations against the embattled Acting Chairman.

Meanwhile, there is still confusion within the EFCC as to who is to act while Magu faces the panel.

The source noted that the Secretary of the Commission, a civilian, and Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar.

Though the Secretary is senior to Umar, he cannot statutorily act on behalf of Magu as the law establishing the Commission specifically said that a serving or retired Police Officer must head it.

So far, no organ of the federal government has made any pronouncement on who is to formally be Interim Acting Chairman or the nomination to the position of EFCC chairman.
