Fire burns one of Abuja’s World Trade Centre (WTC) buildings

One part of Abuja’s major landmarks, the World Trade Centre (WTC), located at the city’s Train Terminus and opposite Churchgate Towers by Constitution Avenue along the Central Business District (CBD), was on Monday gutted by fire.

At 110m (361ft), the twin 24-storey buildings has WTC Tower 1 & 2, which topped out in 2015, is the tallest residential cum office buildings in Nigeria, and stands standing at 120m (394ft).

Spokesperson of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Ugo Huan, said that personnel of the Service was immediately drafted to the scene and they succeeded in putting out the fire.

Though it was not immediately certain what could have caused the fire, but eyewitnesses at the scene said it may have been as a result of electrical fault from the power source being used for the construction of the building.

Smoke was blowing from the top of the building and was seen from most parts of the city.

President Goodluck Jonathan had September 2011 launched the project. It was slated to cost over $1 billion with an estimated completion date initially slated for 2013. The building is yet uncompleted.
