Anambra students’ group institute essay competition in memory of late member, Wendy Ebenezer Linda, submissions ends July 23

Students of Anambra descent at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, under the aegis of the Association of Anambra State Students in Nigeria and Diaspora (AASSIND) has in collaboration with National Association of Anambra Law Students (NAALS), University of Nigeria Chapter, have instituted an Essay Writing Competition in memory of one of her members, Ms Wendy Ebenezer Linda.

President of the umbrella Anambra State students association, Chukwuka Igwe and NAALS President Ibeabuchi Godwin and Mbanasor Victoria said in a statement that the maiden essay writing competition is partly to commemorate one of the active members of the association, Wendy Linda, who was until her death last year in a fatal accident around Mayfair, Ile-Ife an active member of the association.

The joint statement also noted that the essay writing completion is to promote writing’s very manifest objective of rejuvenating ideas, communication, impacting knowledge and preserving culture; as well as the need to preserve history, and re-awaken Socio-cultural and socio-political consciousness.

Igwe said the competition is also in line with the mission and vision of the association which, among other things, is to enhance the intellectual and academic prowess of her members. He also stated that the ongoing competition is not limited to members of the association alone, but to any interested Nigerian student.

The competition is of two categories; a topic for Anambra students and another for non-indigenes of the State.

For Anambrarians, the topic is ‘Grassroot Politics and the Ignorance of the People to Government: Are the People of Anambra Politically Conscious?’ For non-indigenes, the topic is; ‘The Impact of Socio-Cultural Value on Igbo Society.’

Igwe said that the associations are already receiving submissions and that the deadline for submission of the completed essays been extended to July 23rd, 2020.

According to him, the top three winners of the essay competition are entitled to a free course to foster their personal skills sponsored by Learnaholics Academy, Africa. Other sponsors include the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter and Engr. Jonathan Udemba, the CEO, Onochie Global Resources.  The top three from each category would receive cash prizes and award of merit.

He also thanked other student leaders for working selflessly towards the success of this competition, calling on other students to emulate such service.

Entrants into the writing competition are to note that their essays must not exceed 1,000 words, 12 font size, Times New Roman, and should be submitted to thememorialessay.gmail.com.

The winners will be announced on the AASSNID Instagram account @aassnid_oau and @Naals_Unec respectively.
