The thrilling rollercoaster of Kanye West’s life and career

He kicked off his presidential campaign by slamming Harriet Tubman

Stars Insider

Kanye West is a force to be reckoned with. The star has been in the game for more than 15 years, though for many it’s hard to remember the entertainment industry without him in it. While he’s known for his many talents, including his producing and rapping, he’s also been in the news increasingly as of late due to his controversial comments and political views.

Let’s break it down.

Professional life

He began his musical career as a producer for Roc-A-Fella records in the early 2000s, which meant producing for names like Jay-Z, Common, Ludacris, and numerous other stars. However, he clearly wanted to break into the scene himself, which he did in 2004 with ‘College Dropout.’ Since then, he’s released eight studio albums, with a ninth on the way this year. Not to mention the numerous albums for other artists he has continued to produce, with Kanye’s name sure to draw in some major attention.

Marriage

Kanye West married Kim Kardashian in 2014. Together they have built an empire, with Kanye getting into a variety of business ventures, as well as appearing on his wife’s reality TV show, ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians.’ They have also had four children in the meantime, the most recent born via surrogate.

Controversial Commentary

While Kanye may be hailed for his musical success, he has also often been criticized for his controversial statements and behavior. While his comments surrounding current US President Donald Trump‘s policies may be getting the attention more recently, it’s not the first time West has gotten political. He also shocked fans everywhere when he claimed that former President George W. Bush didn’t care about black people, this in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. And this is not even mentioning the infamous TMZ slavery interview…

Then to prove he’s still full of surprises, Kanye West announced in early July that he would be running to become President of the United States in 2020. While there were doubts that he would follow through, Kanye held his first presidential rally on July 19, where he stirred up even more controversy with his comments about Harriet Tubman, abortion, and the possibility of Kim divorcing him.
