The orgy of violence in Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos is dying down but the list of buildings destroyed in reaction to the shooting/killing of EndSARS protesters by the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Tollgate is emerging.
Apart from the private and public buildings torched, the protesters also invaded and desecrated the palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu.
Earlier, a team of armed soldiers in about five soldiers had rescued the Oba from angry protesting youths who attempted to burn down the palace.
Though they did not meet the Oba at the palace, they invaded the buildings, desecrated even the throne room and left with the Oba of Lagos staff of office and paraded the streets with it.
The Personal Assistant to the monarch, Deoye Olumegbon, said the team of soldiers had responded to a distress call and whisked Mr Akiolu away.
“Kabiyesi is safe. Soldiers came to rescue him. But thugs have vandalised and looted the palace. No one is dead but they carted away valuable properties,” said Mr Olumegbon, a Prince from the Olumegbon royal family.
The Oba’s distress call was made when the rampaging youths were headed to the palace after successfully burning down the Ebute Ero Police post. The Police post, which is located in Idumota, has the palace as part of its jurisdiction.
Reports shows that as at noon on Wednesday, the following buildings have been razed by the angry youths.
1. Oriental Hotel
2. Lekki Toll Gate and Lekki Concession Company (LCC)
3. Zenith Bank, Admiralty Way
4. GTB on Admiralty Way
5. Polaris Bank, Admiralty Way
6. Over 30 buses belonging to Lagos State Government BRT Company, and the BRT terminal at Oyingbo
7. Gov of Lagos State Sanwo-Olu’s family house
8. Ajeromi Ifelodun LG Secretariat
9. Cars within the premises of Ministry of the Environment Alausa, Lagos
10. Television Continental (TVC), television station owned by Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu (Former Governor of Lagos).
11. Over 20 police stations burnt
12. Nigeria Ports Authority Building Marina Lagos.
