U.S. Congressional hearing on Nigeria’s human rights challenges holds next week Wednesday

A coalition of Nigerian Diaspora and American groups will on Wednesday next week host a virtual Congressional Briefing for the United States 117th Congress on “Key Human Rights Challenges in Nigeria.”

The groups organizing the briefing include the Nigeria Working Group, the African Public Affairs Committee, Amnesty International (AI USA) and it is being organized in coordination with the office of U.S. Representative, Al Green (TX-09).

According to the notice of the briefing, “the significant presence of Nigerian-Americans whose families and friends in Nigeria are directly impacted, necessitates urgent action from Congress on behalf of their constituents.”

It noted that the February 17 event would be led by the Nigeria Working Group working “ in partnership with the Nigerian Diaspora, as well as Nigerians on the ground who are actively engaged in the ENDSARS movement.”

The essence of the meeting, the organizers said, is “to highlight these key issues and make recommendations on how the U.S. Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration can support action to bring accountability on behalf of their constituents.”

The opening remarks will be delivered by Representative Al Green (TX-09) with Professor Toyin Falola, University of Texas as Moderator.
