The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has urged Nigerians to maintain vigilance and observe all protocols just as Nigeria recorded 26 new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), thus bringing the total number of infections in the country to 164,233.
The figure of 26 new infections is the lowest figure since April 13, 2020 when 20 cases was recorded across the country.
The NCDC said via its official Twitter handle the 26 new infections on Sunday were registered in five States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Saying that Nigeria recorded no death from complications of COVID-19 as of April 18, the national health agency stated that seven people were treated and discharged from various isolation centres across the country on Sunday.
Altogether, the NCDC said out of the 164,233 confirmed cases, 154,332 people have so far recovered from COVID-19 and discharged from hospitals since the pandemic was reported on February 27, 2020.
Currently, Nigeria has a total of 7,840 active cases while the national death toll remains 2,061.
The country has also conducted a total of 1,870,915 sample tests.
NCDC said that despite the low figures of new COVID-19 infections, Nigerians should maintain vigilance and continue to observe all protocols by disinfecting surfaces in their homes, shops and offices regularly to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in their communities.
“Take responsibility to protect yourself, loved ones, customers, employees and society from infections such as COVID-19,” it advised.
Meanwhile, primary and secondary schools open nationwide and children return to school, the NCDC advised parents to help their children stay safe by teaching and reinforcing everyday preventive actions by not letting their guard down.
“They should wear a face mask properly, wash their hands regularly, observed physical distance, avoid large gatherings held indoors with poor adherence to prevention measures and always seek medical attention when ill.
“Most people who are infected with COVID-19 may not show symptoms but can spread the disease to other people.
“Let us continue to adhere to all public health advisories on COVID-19 prevention,” it said.
It appealed to parents and guardians to inform school heads of any developments or signs that a child was not well.
