3-month-old baby, 5 women kidnapped in Abuja as gunmen kill one student, abduct others, lecturers at Kaduna Polytechnic

A three-month-old baby and five women have been kidnapped at Anguwar Epe, behind Government Science Secondary School (GSSS), Tungan-Maje, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

And on Thursday night, one sudent was shot dead while students and lecturers were abducted when kidnappers invaded Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic in Zaria, Kaduna State.

A resident, identified as Ishaku, said the incident happened around 10:23 on Tuesday and that some of the kidnappers, who took strategic positions in the community, shot sporadically into the air to scare neighbours and security agents from coming after them.

“They came through the big mountain behind the Epe and positioned themselves before some other gangs and invaded two houses and whisked away a three-month-old child alongside five women,” he said.

He added that before the arrival of some policemen from Tugan-maje outpost, the kidnappers had already left with their victims.

Tungan-Maje, a densely populated community, located along Zuba-Gwagwalada road, has continued to suffer frequent attacks by bandits. Early this year, a retired Comptroller of Immigration alongside five residents were kidnapped in the area.

The latest kidnap incident in the community happened a day after the Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr Usman Alkali, approved the construction of a police divisional headquarters at Tunga Maje.

The spokesperson of the FCT police command, ASP Maryam Yusuf, asked our reporter to send her a text but she had not replied the text message as of the time of filing this report.

It is not yet clear the number of students abducted from Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic located in Zaria, Kaduna State.

But sources confirmed that the abducted lecturers include Mr Habila Nasai from General Studies Department and Mr Adamu Shehu Shika from Accounting Department.

It was also confirmed that the student who was shot reportedly during the abduction, died on the way to the hospital.

This is the third major attack on a higher institution in Kaduna in three months.

On March 11, 2021, gunmen abducted students of Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Igabi LGA, in Kaduna.

On April 20, 2021, students of Greenfield University were kidnapped from the school campus in Chikun LGA, still in Kaduna.

The abduction at Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic took place hours after President Muhammadu Buhari vowed that non-State actors threatening the peace of the country will be crushed.

Despite repeated assurances from government and security agencies, insecurity has been on the rise across the country.

Students abducted from the Salihu Tanko Islamic School in Tegina, Niger State, are still in captivity.

While two mothers lost their lives as a result of the incident, a three-year-old victim died in the hands of her captors.
