Omicron COVID-19 explodes in Nigeria, Lagos records 3,393 cases on Wednesday

  • NCDC warns Nigerians to take responsibility

The Nigeria Centre of Disease Control (NCDC) has announced an unprecedented explosion of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases with Lagos State registering a total of 3,393 cases.

NCDC also reported two deaths on Wednesday, to take the death toll to 2,891.

But out of the 3,393 cases, 2,536 were new infections unreported between 13 December and 19 December. The revealed backlog of 2,536 confirmed cases in Lagos consists of the 37 registered on December 13th, 365 on 14th, 197 on 15th, 577 on 16th, 742 on 18th and 618 on 19th December.

On Tuesday, Lagos had posted 1,552 cases, up from 844 on Monday.

Statistics from the NCDC said that States such as Rivers, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Ekiti, Oyo , Delta, Kano and Ogun are also experiencing more cases.

In a Facebook post earlier on Thursday morning, the NCDC warned Nigerians that “there is an increase in confirmed #COVID19 cases,” urging everyone to take collective responsibility by wearing face mask.washing hands regularly and practising physical distancing.

On Wednesday, Rivers reported 260 COVID-19 cases, the second highest after Lagos while Edo logged 62 and Akwa Ibom 32.

The NCDC report also included 42 confirmed cases reported from Akwa Ibom State for 20th (13) & 21st (29) December.

According to the federal health agency, “nine confirmed and six discharged cases was reported from Enugu State for 21st December.”

The total breakdown of cases for Wednesday include Lagos-3,393, Rivers-260, Edo-62, Akwa Ibom-42, Kaduna-39, Ekiti-38, Oyo-38, Delta-31, Kano-31, Ogun-30, Abia-26, Bauchi-15, Ondo-14, Enugu-9 and Kwara-7.

Altogether, Nigeria has recorded a total of 231,413 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 211,853 of them discharged and a total of 2,991 registered deaths.
