The head of Russia's state coronavirus task force says the number of deaths nationwide in June this year rose nearly 14 percent over June 2020. That's due to the spread of the delta variant of the virus that caused infections to soar and a record spike in deaths. Russia has suffered a surge of infections since early June, with daily new cases rising from about 9,000 in the beginning of the summer to over 23,000 in early July. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Sunday morning that Nigeria’s death toll from the dreaded COVID-19 jumped by 21 casualties on Saturday, Christmas Day, with total figure now 3,014.

The 21 deaths recorded on Saturday represents the highest figure the nation has registered in recent weeks.

The figure came just as NCDC reported that Nigeria recorded 1,305 new cases of the virus on Saturday, with Lagos ramping up 705 fresh cases and Oyo, 234.

Saturday’s 1,305 new infections brings the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 236,014.

Out of this number, 212,357 have been treated and discharged.

Statistics from Lagos shows that apart from the 705 recorded from Lagos and 234 from Oyo, other new infections registered on Saturday include Ondo-88, Kaduna-79, Rivers-78, Ogun-30, Anambra-25, Kano-24, Enugu-12, Ekiti-11, Jigawa-6, Osun-6, Plateau-6 and Zamfara-1.
