Armed Forces of Nigeria Ranks 4th in Africa, 35 in Global Power Index

The Armed Forces of Nigeria is the 35th most powerful military in the world and the 4th in Africa, according to Global Firepower (GFP) 2022.

The GFP statistics shows that Nigeria, having one of the largest uniformed combat services in Africa, is stronger than the militaries of 18 European nations.  

Globally, United States remains the super power with a PwrIndx score of 0.0453, followed closely by Russia with PwrIndx of 0.0510. China comes third, India (4th), Japan (5th), South Korea, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan and Brazil at 10th position.

Egypt, with first position as the most powerful military in Africa, occupies the 12th position globally at Power Index (PwrIndx) of 0.1869. South Africa is second with 0.4276 but 26 globally, Algeria is third in Africa and 31th with 0.4724 and Nigeria came fourth position in Africa with 0.5745 score and  35th globally.

Coming fifth is Morocco, then Ethiopia, Angola, Libya, Sudan and Tunisia at 10th position. Occupying the 11th position is Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by Kenya, Chad, Zambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Mali, South Sudan and Cameroon at 20th position.

At the bottom six of the 36 countries under review are Burkina Faso at 31st position, Gabon, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Somalia at the bottom 36th position.

Ranking the total available active military manpower by country, from highest to lowest.



The Global Firepower (GFP) utilizes over 50 individual factors to determine a given nation’s PowerIndex (‘PwrIndx’) score with categories ranging from military might and financials to logistical capability and geography.

Since 2006, GFP has provided a unique analytical display of data concerning 140 modern military powers based on each nation’s potential war-making capability across land, sea, and air fought by conventional means.
