The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Ms Abike Dabiri-Erewa, On Friday said Nigerians being detained in Poland were forewarned of the consequence of staying back and refusing evacuation as they fled the war in Ukraine.
Dabiri-Erewa, who had condemned the detention of Nigerians and other Africans, said the detainees were advised against staying back during the evacuation by the Nigerian government.
The Federal Government had evacuated Nigerians, especially students, who fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries like Poland on the heels of Russian invasion.
The chairman, via her Twitter handle, @abikedabiri, on Friday said arrangement were made for all Nigerians who wanted to return home.
She wrote, “There is no extra expenditure. With @MBuhari’s directive and a govt team led by @GeoffreyOnyeama, arrangements were made for ALL who wanted to return.
“Some stayed back and are now being kept in tortuous detention centers in Poland. They were warned.”
She urged the Poland government to deport the affected persons to Nigeria rather than keep them in detention.
“But the right thing for the country to do is deport them than keep them in detention centres, though they were warned of the consequences,” she added.
