Nigeria’s passport is ranked globally at the 99th position out of the ranked 112 nations, meaning that Nigerians can only travel to 45 other countries without visas.
Forty-three African nations are ahead of Nigeria in the ranking by Henley Passport Index which collates the original, authoritative ranking of all the world’s 193 passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Nigeria comes below 53 South Africa at 53 position, Botswana – 62, Namibia – 67, Lesotho – 68, Malawi – 71, Kenya and Tanzania tied at 72, Tunisia and Zambia tied at 73, Gambia – 76, Uganda – 77, Cape Verde Islands – 78 and Zimbabwe at 79.
Other ranking by African countries include Ghana and Morocco tied at 80, Sierra Leone – 81, Mozambique 82, Benin Republic and Rwanda at 83, Sao Tome and Principe – 84, Mauritania – 85, Burkina Faso – 86 and Gabon 87.
Others still include Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal tied at 88, Equatorial Guinea and Madagascar at 89, Guinea, Mali and Togo tied at 90, Chad and Niger tied at 91 and Algeria, Central African Republic, Egypt and Guinea-Bissau 92.
Other African countries ranking also include Burundi 93, Angola and Cameroon at 94, Liberia – 95, Congo (Rep.) – 96, Djibouti – 97 while Ethiopia tied with Nigeria at 99.
The African countries that rank lower than Nigeria are South Sudan – 100, Eritrea – 101, Congo (Dem. Rep.) – 102, Sudan – 103, Libya – 104 and Somalia at 107.
The bottom five countries globally include Yemen – 108, Pakistan – 109, Syria – 110, Iraq – 111 and Afghanistan – 112.
Globally, the report said that Japan and Singapore jointly rank first and can travel to 192 countries visa-free.
Others include Germany and South Korea at second position and can travel to 190 countries visa-free
At third position with visa-free access to 189 countries are Finland, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain.
Fourth position is occupied by Austria, Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden and have access to 188 countries visa-free.
At 5th position are France, Ireland, Portugal 187 and United Kingdom with access to 187 countries visa-free while sixth position include Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and United States with access to 186 countries visa-free.
At 7th position are Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Greece and Malta and Hungary occupies 8th position. Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia occupy the 9th position while Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia caps the 10th position with access to 181 countries visa-free.
