The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened a nationwide protest over the arrest and detention of Aminu Adamu a final year student in the Federal University Dutse (FUD) on the orders of Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, giving the Nigerian Police Force two days ultimatum for his conditional release.
NANS national treasure and chairman in charge of Northwest Nigeria, Comrade Bashir Sulaiman Limanci, told journalists in Dutse, JIgawa state capital on Tuesday threatened nationwide street protests by all students in the campus of Nigerian universities against the Police and First Lady Aisha Buhari if Adamu is not released within the two days’ notice.
The student body condemned the arrest and detention of Aminu Adamu, who is a final year student of Environmental Management and Toxicology who is to starts his final examination on December 6, 2022.
According to the association: “We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Aminullahi Adamu, a native of Azare in Bauchi State since no any charge has been leveled against him. We call on the federal government, President Muhammadu Buhari, First Lady Aisha Buhari and those involved within the security agencies to shun the temptation on the infringement of the right of this citizen.”
NANS said “if anybody is found culpable of any level or defamation of character, such a suspect should be charged to the jurisdiction of the court within the 24 hours.”
He said failure to adhere to this call and ultimatum, then student unions, the Human Rights Commissions, Civil Society Organizations will hold massive peaceful demonstration and take over the streets in the country until he is released.
NANS expressed dismay over the arrest and continued detention for three weeks now without being taken to court, saying that this is contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian constitution which says any suspect should be arraigned before the court of law with 24 hours of arrest.
