The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Kingsley Obiora, the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of Economic Policy.
According to reports, his arrest followed allegations of financial mismanagement under Godwin Emefiele, suspended CBN Governor.
Sources confirmed that Obiora was targeted fir arrest to act as principal witness against Emefiele, former his boss at the CBN.
As Deputy Governor in charge of Economic Policy, he oversees the formulation and implementation of policies that promote the stability and growth of the Nigerian economy.
Obiora, who was born March 6, 1976, resumed as a Deputy Governor in the Central Bank of Nigeria on March 02, 2020.
Before this, he was an Alternate Executive Director at International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in Washington DC, USA.
In the capacity as Alternate Executive Director, Obiora was a member of the Executive Board, collectively responsible for conducting the daily operations of the IMF. He also assisted in representing the interests of 23 African Countries, including Nigeria, on the board.
Abbas Masanawa, another top CBN official, was arrested recently and held in the custody of the DSS, seeking to determine the steepness of Emefiele’s alleged corruption.
Emefiele has been in the custody of the DSS since June 10, 2023, a day after President Bola Tinubu removed him from office.
It would be recalled that Dr. Obiora was nominated CBN Deputy Governor on Thursday, January 16, 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari and his appointment was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
He replaced Dr. Joseph Okwu Nnanna who retired from the services of CBN on February 2, 2020.
