UNISFA Force Commander, Acting Head Of Mission Visits Nigerian Contingent Base, Lauds Army Role In Peace Support Operations In South Sudan

The Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander (HoM/FC) United Nations Interim Security Force For Abyei (UNISFA), Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyer has visited the Nigerian Contingent (NIGCON 1) Camp to spend a day with the peacekeepers, commending them for their level of discipline and leadership role projecting the Nigerian Army in Peace Support Operations.

During the visit which took place from September 7-8 2023, Nigerian Contingent Commander, Colonel James Nkereuwem briefed General Sawyerr on the unit’s activities and achievements since arriving the mission area.

The Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander commended the professionalism, dedication, and operational conduct of the Contingent in securing the Force Headquarters Camp. 

General Sawyerr also commended the Contingent Commander for his purposeful and visionary leadership that has prevented and stopped the issue of thefts within the Force Headquarters Camp. 

During the tour of their camp, the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander also expressed his satisfaction with the Camp’s infrastructure and maintenance, acknowledging the efforts made by the Contingent Commander to create a conducive living environment for the peacekeepers. 

He expressed gratitude for the commitment and professionalism demonstrated by the Nigerian peacekeepers and wished them the very best in their tour of duty in UNISFA. 

The highlights of the visit also included an interactive session with troops, presentations of souvenirs and tree planting by the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander to commemorate the visit.

Nigeria on Wednesday March 15, 23 returned back to international peacekeeping operations with the induction of the Nigerian Base Defence Company deployed as part of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
