- The newspaper pointed out that the majority of European countries are uncertain about the choice of a possible path in case of former US President’s win at the US presidential election
Former US President Donald Trump’s possible win at the 2024 United States Presidential election may result in the country’s withdrawal from NATO, The New York Times reported.
NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance between 31 member States – 29 European and two North American (U.S. and Canada).
Formed at the behest of the U.S. in 1949 by 12 member countries, it is the most powerful military alliance in the world and originally operated as a counterforce to Russia (Union of Soviet Socialists Republic – USSR) and now China..
According to the U.S. daily, numerous diplomats as well as governments of NATO member states voiced alarm previously that “Trump’s return could mean not just the abandonment of Ukraine, but a broader American retreat from the continent and a gutting of the Atlantic alliance.”
“There is great fear in Europe that a second Trump presidency would result in an actual pullout of the United States from NATO,” the daily quoted James Stavridis, a retired four-star Navy Admiral who was NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander between 2009 and 2013, as saying. “That would be an enormous strategic and historic failure on the part of our nation.”
The New York Times pointed out that the majority of European countries are uncertain about the choice of a possible path in case of Trump’s win at the US presidential election.
The daily stated that smaller countries “are expected to try to buy their way into Mr. Trump’s good graces by increasing their orders of American weapons or… by performing grand acts of adulation…”
The United States holds a Presidential election in November 2024.
On April 25, the incumbent 46th US president, Joe Biden, declared his candidacy for re-election. Trump announced his campaign for a Presidential term in November 2022.
