U.S.-based Catholic Reverend Sister in Court Over Assault on 75-year-old Stepmother

A United States-based Reverend Sister Ngozi Mamah of the University Sisters of Assumptions Congregation, has been dragged to court in Obollo Afor, Udenu Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State for allegedly assaulting her 75-year-old stepmother, Mrs Beatrice Mamah.

The incident occurred in Amagu, Ada Agu Obollo Etiti in their family house where the rebellious Reverend Sister was said to have slapped the stepmother several times for refusing to join a marabout praying group she brought in from Imo State.

The stepmother, who is a devout Catholic and who has the title of Nnemuruoha, a title reserved for recognized and committed Catholic mothers of Nsukka Catholic Diocese, had infuriated the Reverend Sister for refusing to join the praying group because she saw them as non-Catholics performing rituals that are not of Catholic tradition.

The Sister, who imported the praying group as part of her mother’s first anniversary, abused the stepmother several times before slapping her persistently until help came for the aged woman.

Children of the Nnemuruoha took the matter to Obollo Afor Police station where relations tried in vain to intervene as some family members insisted on conducting a mental test on the Reverend sister whose behavior in the family has been very unbearable.

The controversial Reverend sister who sensed that her strange prayer group would face resistance in the Catholic-dominated village, had hired some soldiers who traveled with her to the village for protection. The soldiers molested and seized the phones of those who tried to record the prayer session.

Meanwhile, the praying group who conducted a series of incantations with candles, biscuits, and whisky wine are said to have returned to their base in Imo State.

A source at the Secretariat of Nsukka Catholic Diocese said that the Reverend Sister’s case is not new as several cases involving her unruly behavior are known to even the Bishop. But the source stated that she is answerable to the Superior General of the University Sisters Of Assumption Congregation where she belongs.

A text message to the Vicar General of the Reverend Sisters Congregation, the University Sisters of Assumption, for the reaction was not responded to but a source close to the headquarters of the Congregation shows that the reports of undignified behavior on the Sister have been a regular occurrence and they are fed up with her.

When she was brought before the Obollo Afor Magistrate Court on Tuesday April 30, 2024, the Parish Priest of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Ada Agu, Obollo Etiti, Reverend Father Paul Nwonu pleaded to have the case settled out of court.

His request was obliged and he was given one week to report back to the court.
