DICON at 60: Defence Minister Says Nigeria Targets 100% Local Defence Equipment Production 

Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle says “the new DICON Act 2023 has the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and security by boosting foreign exchange earnings through local production of defence equipment thereby creating jobs and reducing capital flight to foreign nations.”

Speaking at a Press Briefing marking the 60-year-old anniversary of the Defence Industries Corporation (DICON), Dr. Matawalle, who dwelt of the critical role of the institution in Nigeria’s defence sector, said that the activities including the Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC) in Abuja scheduled August 14-15, 2024 is part of efforts to collaborate with indigenous companies towards maximizing local defence equipment manufacturing.

DICON was established in 1964 as platform for manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment.

The Minister noted that the Defence Conference, who serves as a premier platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and explore the future frontiers of defence technology in Africa, has as theme – “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology.”

Stating that this marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey to innovation, resilience, and dedication to the defence needs of the nation, Dr. Matawalle noted: “DICON’s journey began with a modest start, focusing on the production of small arms and ammunition. Over the years, the corporation expanded its capabilities, venturing into the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment.”

Stating that there is ongoing repositioning of Ajaokuta Steel Company towards production of local military hardware, he noted that DICON and the Steel Company are working “vigorously and ambitiously” to revive the company as “a game changer to Nigerian Industry and the economy as a whole.”

According to Matawalle: “Despite facing challenges, DICON persevered, driven by its commitment to self-reliance and national security. And DICON’s 60-year journey is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to self-reliance in defence production. Through collaboration and innovation, the corporation has established itself as a key player in the defence sector. As DICON continues to evolve, its contributions will remain crucial to Nigeria’s national security and economic growth.”

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Kana, in explaining efforts towards patronizing military defence products, said that henceforth, every Ministry, Department and Agency (MDA) must seek clearance from the Ministry of Defence to before the importation of any military hardware in Nigeria.

This is to ensure that local manufacturers who will be leading the production of the Defence needs of the country reap the benefits of their investments.

The Director General DICON, Major General Aniedi Edet said the 60th celebration and the Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference will give a platform to youth and young inventors to showcase their inventions. He stressed that a range of the equipments currently being used by the personnel are being manufactured by DICON.

Other events slated for the anniversary include Exhibition/Virtual Tour of DICON and Launch of the New DICON Strategy and Brand Identity at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja on Wednesday, 14th August 2024 and Closing Ceremony, Book Launch, and commemoration of DICON’s past Board Chairmen and Director Generals on
Thursday, 15th August 2024 at 6:00 pm.
