In a statement issued in Kaduna by Secretary-General of JNI, Professor Khalid Aliyu, June 16, 2026 marked the beginning of Muharram 1448 AH as declared by the Sultan of Sokoto, making Wednesday, June 24, the ninth day of Muharram (Tasu’a) and Thursday, June 25, the tenth day (Ashoora).

He  stated that the two days hold special significance in Islam and are highly recommended for voluntary fasting.

The organisation quoted Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as saying, “The best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Al-Muharram,” as recorded in Sahih Muslim.

According to him, the Sultan urged Muslims to observe the fasts while seeking Allah’s guidance, rectitude and stability for the nation.

JNI noted that the victory granted to Prophet Musa (AS) over Pharaoh, commemorated on the day of Ashoora, should inspire believers to seek divine intervention against Nigeria’s security challenges.

The organisation urged Muslims to pray for Allah’s intervention against banditry, insurgency, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity affecting the country.

It also stressed the importance of repentance (Taubah), seeking Allah’s forgiveness (Istighfar) and offering fervent supplications during the period.

According to JNI, persistent seeking of Allah’s forgiveness attracts relief from difficulties and hardships.

The statement cited several verses of the Holy Qur’an, including chapters Hud, Al-Anfal, Az-Zumar, Ghafir, Ali-Imran and An-Nisa, to emphasise the importance of repentance and seeking divine mercy.

JNI urged Muslims not to despair but to continue placing their trust in Allah, whom it described as the One who hears and answers the prayers of His servants.

The organisation also called on Nigerians to remain God-fearing, law-abiding, peaceful and committed to productive endeavours.

JNI prayed for Allah’s mercy and intervention in addressing the nation’s challenges and restoring peace and security across the country.
