One killed as bandits kidnap scores of students at Salihu Tanko Islamiyya School, Tegina, Rafi LGA, Niger State

Bandits have abducted students of Salihu Tanko Islamiyya School, Tegina in Rafi Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.

Mary Noel Berje, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, said that the Niger State Government is still gathering reports on the attack so as to take necessary measures to secure the release of those kidnapped.

Though unconfirmed reports put the number of kidnapped students at about 200, Ms Barje said: “Yes there was an abduction at an Islamic School in Tegina. But we are yet to ascertain the number of student abducted. Search and rescue is ongoing,”

The bandits had invaded Tegina town on Sunday morning, operating, shooting sporadically and attacking people at will.

A source said that as the bandits took over Tegina town and its surrounding communities, they also barricaded and occupied the Tegina-Zungeru-Minna road.

The source, speaking on the abduction of students Islamiyya School, said that it is not yet clear on the number of students kidnapped.

However, two people were reportedly shot in the attack on the school, with one person confirmed dead.
