The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has clarified that its recent visa restrictions on Nigerian citizens are unrelated to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s participation at the 2025 BRICS summit hosted by Brazil or Nigeria’s refusal to accept deported Venezuelan convicts and undocumented migrants.
In a recent statement, the mission explained that the decision to implement a three-month single-entry visa policy for Nigerians was purely a security measure aimed at protecting U.S. immigration systems.
It noted that the policy could be reviewed if Nigeria strengthens its immigration processes to meet global standards.
This clarification came a day after Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed that the country had rejected a U.S. proposal to resettle Venezuelan prisoners and undocumented migrants. The minister added that Nigeria already has enough internal challenges and cannot accommodate criminals or illegal migrants from other countries.
The deportation proposal dates back to former President Donald Trump’s administration, which had considered transferring deportees to third-party nations such as Libya and Sudan.
Following Tuggar’s comments, there was speculation on social media that the U.S. visa restriction was retaliation against Nigeria’s rejection of the Venezuelan deportees or its growing alliance with BRICS, especially in light of new U.S. tariffs on BRICS countries.
However, the American mission dismissed such claims, saying: “This reduction is not the result of any nation’s stance on third-country deportees, introduction of e-visa policies, or affiliations with groups like BRICS.”
“The reduction in validity is part of an ongoing global review of U.S. visa policies, using technical and security benchmarks to safeguard U.S. immigration systems.”
