The Crown They Stole: How Gombe’s Christians Are Being Crushed Under Islamic Rule

On December 26, I received an appeal. Not a social media tag. Not a trending topic. A solemn, direct letter. It came from Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba — the duly elected traditional ruler (Mai Tangle) of the Tangale people of Gombe State, Nigeria — writing to me from forced exile in Sierra Leone.

The letter was signed not only by Dr. Maiyamba, but also by Comrade Danladi Bako (President of the Tangale Community Development Association) and Reverend Andele Tadi (President of Tangale Community Overseas). They wrote not just as individuals, but as witnesses, with the full support of community elders across Nigeria and the diaspora.

They are not asking for pity. They are not playing politics. They are sounding an alarm. I have reviewed their petition. I have confirmed the basic facts independently. And I can tell you: their story is real. It is credible. And it is deadly serious.

Gombe State is under siege. This Northeastern region — surrounded by terror-scarred Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa — has become a textbook case of how Christians are systematically suppressed under Islamic political rule. The Tangale people are indigenous to southern Gombe. They are majority Christian. They have centuries of tradition. And in 2021, when the time came to choose their new traditional ruler, their kingmakers followed their law. Dr. Maiyamba won the majority vote — 5 out of 9. But Governor Inuwa Yahaya, bypassing both custom and conscience, imposed his own appointee — a Muslim candidate who had received only 2 votes.

This is not a misunderstanding. It is a calculated act of religious and political domination. That is how Christians are forced to exist under Islamic rule in Nigeria: truth buried under bureaucracy, elections reversed by decree, indigenous authority hijacked, and Christian leaders exiled for their faith. Dr. Maiyamba now lives in exile. His crime? Being Christian.

This is not an isolated case. From Borno to Benue, from Kaduna to Jos, the pattern is clear: Christian communities are attacked, displaced, and disenfranchised. Churches are demolished while mosques remain. Judges, governors, and traditional leaders are sidelined or purged. Government funds are weaponized to starve Christian regions into silence. This is the soft machinery of genocide — not always with machetes, but with documents, decrees, and deliberate erasure.

The Tangale people continue to resist with dignity. Their tribal councils, diaspora leaders, and church bodies affirm Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba as their only legitimate Mai Tangle. And today, I do too. I stand with the Tangale. I reject the imposed ruler. I denounce the betrayal of their customs, their vote, and their faith.

Gombe is occupied territory. To the persecutors: know this — every stolen crown has a witness. And every lie incurs a debt to the truth.
