The Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Police Command, has ordered the detention of six police officers allegedly involved in a viral case of police extortion in Onitsha.
State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed that the officers will remain in custody pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident captured in a widely circulated complaint video. They include two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) and four Inspectors.
In addition to the detention, senior officers linked to the matter have been formally queried, while statements have been obtained from other officers under caution in line with established police investigative procedures.
The Police Command also disclosed that steps have been initiated to arrest a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator in Onitsha, whose alleged involvement in the incident suggests a possible conspiracy.
Meanwhile, through the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpoko, authorities have invited the victim featured in the complaint video to come forward and provide additional testimony to aid the investigation and guide further disciplinary actions.
The full statement by State Police Spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, reads: “The Anambra State Police Command has taken note of a viral complaint video alleging the unprofessional conduct of some police officers in Onitsha.
“The Command wishes to inform the public that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Okpoko had already intercepted the complaint and immediately initiated steps to identify the officers involved in the alleged act.
“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, has directed the DPO to produce the officers concerned for necessary investigation and possible disciplinary action in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Force.
“Preliminary findings to aid the ongoing investigation reveal the following:
The DPO had earlier detailed officers to identify the personnel allegedly involved in the act.
“The money allegedly collected from the victim has been returned which shows serious indictment and unprofessional conduct of the officers.
“The involvement of the POS operator suggests possible conspiracy in the incident.
“The Command reiterates that it will not shield any officer found culpable. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with established procedures.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all citizens.
“Further developments will be communicated to the public.”
