- Trump insists Iran wants ‘very much to make a deal’
Iran says Donald Trump has “backed down” from attacking its power plants after a “firm warning” from Tehran, according to Iranian media.
The comments were also made by the Iranian embassy in Kabul which posted on social media saying Trump retreated following Iran’s threats to “target the energy infrastructure of the entire region”.
The Iranian Fars news agency, citing a source, also claimed there has been no direct communication with the US, nor through intermediaries, after Trump said “very good” conversations on ending the war were held with Iran.
But Trump insists talks between the US and Iran have been “very strong” and Iran wants “very much to make a deal”.
Speaking from Florida, Trump said there have been “major points of agreement” in the discussions involving US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, which he says have gone “perfectly.”
Talks took place yesterday and went into the evening, he said.
“They (Iran) want very much to make a deal. We’d like to make a deal too. We’re going to get together today, by probably phone because it’s very hard… for them to get out, I guess.”
Meanwhile, Trump has held off on his threat to strike Iranian power plants to calm down the financial markets, a US senator has said.
Chris Murphy, Democratic senator for Connecticut, said on X that Trump wasn’t announcing a pause on strikes but on “a possible war crime”.
“This isn’t a message to Iran. It’s a panicky message to the markets,” he wrote.
